Raiders thumped at tourney

? A 10-run first inning was more than enough for the Topeka Golden Giants to knock off the Lawrence Raiders, 10-1, Sunday at Topeka-Seaman.

The Golden Giants won in five innings for their second victory over Lawrence this weekend, securing the championship for their home tournament.

Raiders coach Brad Romme said the idea was to finish a long, hot weekend by using a position player, first baseman and right fielder Matt Sutliffe, on the mound, because Lawrence’s pitching rotation was depleted.

“We were simply trying to steal a couple outs,” Romme said, “and before we knew it it was 10-1.”

Lawrence (19-10) went 2-2 at the tournament.

“The kids played very well for the first three games and it just kind of fell apart at the end,” the coach said.

Beginning on Friday, the Raiders will play at a three-day tournament at Pittsburg.
