Prosecutors have filed federal charges against a couple suspected of committing several recent armed robberies in Kansas, including at Cirilla’s in Lawrence last Thursday.

Federal prosecutors charged David B. Johnson, 26, of Lockhart, Texas, and Brittany R. Holt, 22, of Topeka, each with one count of robbery They were arrested last Saturday in a police chase after the robbery of a Wichita Subway shop.

According to a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom, a grand jury indicted Holt and Johnson Tuesday. Johnson also faces a felon-in-possession charge.

Wichita police said Johnson and Holt were suspects in several other recent robberies, including two in Topeka and the one in Lawrence.

The federal affidavit gave this account:

• Johnson is accused of using a handgun to rob a female Subway employee in Wichita of two sandwiches and money. The employee reported seeing a woman drive the vehicle Johnson arrived and left in.

• Police then chased a blue Chevrolet Impala, and during the chase a Sedgwick County Sheriff’s deputy saw the passenger throw a handgun out the window. The deputy retrieved the gun and a magazine.

• Holt stopped the vehicle in Butler County, where she and Johnson were arrested.

• During questioning, Wichita police determined Holt and Johnson were suspects in the Topeka and Lawrence robberies. Police recovered evidence from the Impala linked to the Topeka and Lawrence robberies.

• In the Lawrence robbery, police were called about 3:15 p.m. Thursday to the adult store, 1206 W. 23rd St. When they arrived, a female employee said a man with a handgun and a woman entered the store. No one was injured, but the employee alleged the man took $108 cash and the woman grabbed merchandise, which was lingerie, an adult toy and a set of bondage equipment, according to a police report.

• Holt told a Wichita detective she had met Johnson four months ago and that “she fell in love with him.” She denied having any prior knowledge that Johnson was going to rob the Wichita Subway, and she told officers she didn’t stop for police during the chase because she was scared.

• During his interview, Johnson told a Topeka detective that Holt was an active participant in the Wichita and Topeka robberies. Johnson has past convictions in Texas, including one for aggravated robbery.
