25 years ago: Kansas dignitaries, local schoolchildren celebrate state’s birthday

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 29, 1987:

  • U.S. Sen. Bob Dole and Gov. Mike Hayden were scheduled to be the featured speakers for a Kansas Day dinner to be held at the Ramada Inn in Topeka. The annual celebration, hosted by the Kansas Republicans, was only one event in the state’s celebration of its 126th birthday. Gov. Hayden was to cut and serve a large birthday cake in the first floor rotunda at the Capitol. Local children were also observing day. Sherry Nelson, third-grade teacher at Riverside School, was shown in a photograph blowing out the candles on a Kansas birthday cake for her students.
  • Members of the Downtown Lawrence Association had voted earlier this week against the proposal to build a mall in the 600 block of downtown. DLA members had come out in favor of a mall in the 700 and 800 blocks of Massachusetts Street, and six votes were tallied for other locations.
