From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 27, 1987:

There was a new focus on prenatal care in the area. Eight pregnant women had already joined the new "Maternal and Infant Care Program" through the Lawrence - Douglas County Health Department. Recent statistics from the state showed that in 1985, about 6,000 Kansas women, including 143 Douglas County women, had failed to receive good prenatal care. The Kansas Legislature had allocated $500,000 in new state funds last session to expand the state prenatal program. Douglas County had received $23,500 of the funds and was among 65 Kansas counties now offering the expanded services. Of the women who had joined the program so far, most were in their 20s, and it was the first pregnancy for about half of them.
