40 years ago: Federal funding approved for Clinton reservoir, flood prevention

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 24, 1972:

President Nixon’s budget, announced today, included $8.5 million for construction at Clinton Reservoir and $1,321,000 for Lawrence flood protection projects. The Clinton appropriation was $1.5 million short of the amount requested by Lawrence officials during 1971 budget hearings but was still regarded as encouraging. The entire project, including a 6,500-acre lake, dam embankment, spillway, and outlet works, were expected to be completed by mid-1976. A north access road from U.S. 40 was also planned. The flood-protection project was to consist of a North Lawrence levee, south Lawrence levee, and Mud Creek channel and levee.
