From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 18, 1987:

• A heavy snowstorm continued to cause accidents across the region. Five people had been injured on the previous day in a Kansas Turnpike accident involving five semi-trailer trucks, a Kansas Highway Patrol car, and three other vehicles. The pile-up had occurred in a heavy snowfall about four miles east of the Topeka turnpike interchange. In Lawrence, police were reporting 98 traffic accidents due to slippery road conditions. According to forecasters, the Lawrence area was to receive up to a foot of total snow accumulation before the storm was expected to end later today.
• Local tax preparers were offering assistance with the new W-4 forms released this year. Once a simple slip of paper requiring only a few seconds to fill out, the new form “now comes in a four-page packet that includes a ‘worksheet,’ tax tables and a lot of instructions with boldfaced ‘shoulds,’ ‘musts,’ and ‘stops.’,” according to a recent news story. Everyone working for an employer was required to fill out a new version of the W-4 because of major taxation laws going into effect for 1987.
