SRS to take applications for heating aid

January 17, 2012

— The Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services plans to start taking applications Wednesday from people who need help paying their winter heating bills.

SRS has about $24 million to distribute under the Low Income Energy Assistance Program, which targets the elderly, the disabled and families with children. The agency will take applications through March 30.

Individuals qualify if their incomes are $1,180 a month or less. A family of four qualifies if its income is $2,400 a month or less.

Applicants must show they've paid at least $80 on their utility bills for the last three months, with payments in two of those three months.

SRS helped about 62,000 Kansas households last year, with an average benefit of $263.

What are you talking about? Single parents can get LIEAP. Heck, single individuals can get it. Too bad the amount granted has dropped by about %25 over the last few years.

Well, autie....sadly....or perhaps not....the LIEAP program is a just a front for further corporate welfare. Don't fool yourself into thinking it's about keeping people and families warm in cold weather. Nope. : It's all about getting them utility companies PAID first....providing warmth to a little kid is a far distant second.

LIEAP payments do not go to the applicant for services: The money is paid directly to the utility of record. Just another form of corporate welfare that gets some all warm and fuzzy.....that is until they figure out what's what.....

Person, I'm just a pundit. Tell me the program is set up to help people first....that's the issue. Truth be is is set up to feed the utility industry.

Your contempt for the working poor is duly noted. Your assumption that all people who earn a poverty wage after WORKING hard don't know how to spend their money is laughable.

Go back to Starbucks and get your $5.00 flavored water......

Sooo will they decide who gets it by opening a Bible, closing their eyes and sticking their finger on a verse?
