From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 16, 1987:

• After a year of low prices at the pump, Lawrence residents were expected to face an increase in the new year. Drivers had paid as little as 69.9 cents a gallon during 1986, but prices today had climbed to 83.9 cents. One local gas station manager blamed the increases on higher crude oil costs. On the international level, prices had been moving higher since an OPEC conference in December when oil ministers had agreed to cut production by 7.6 percent.
• The 141 members of Central Junior High School’s honor choir, Excaliber, had been invited to perform on the previous day at a celebration honoring the birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The students had traveled to Topeka to sing in the Capitol rotunda. Excaliber director Pat Boyd said that Gov. Mike Hayden and former governor John Carlin had requested that the choir sing “We Are the World.”
