From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 15, 1972:

As part of a class exercise, students in the Kansas University School of Architecture and Urban Design had created two models showing some new possibilities for the downtown Lawrence area. The visualizations included the closing of Massachusetts Street so that the shops on either side could be expanded closer together, making conditions more favorable for pedestrian customer flow. Other ideas were a revitalized riverfront area with a new convention center, new housing developments with higher population density, and new city-county offices at the south end of downtown. “It remains now to be seen whether the students have pipe dream creations or something of a crystal ball picture of tomorrow,” the article concluded.
