25 years ago: KU announces visiting speakers for spring semester

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 9, 1987:

  • The Student Union Activities organization at Kansas University announced that they were sponsoring visits from authors Hunter Thompson, who would speak on Feb. 18 in the Kansas Union, and Tom Wolfe, who was to speak on April 15 in Hoch Auditorium. Biologist and author Stephen Jay Gould was also scheduled to speak at KU during the spring semester.
  • A new grocery store was under construction near 23rd and Louisiana. The existing Rusty’s Food Center was to be torn down and replaced with a new 53,000-square-foot, $2.5 million Rusty’s.
  • After responding to a fire in a portion of an old barn near Clinton Lake, Wakarusa Township firefighters were asked by the owner to demolish the barn. Fire Chief Louie McElhaney said that firefighters knocked down the barn and burned it later in the day. The original fire, still under investigation, appeared to have been deliberately set.
