25 years ago: City commission discusses percentage for art

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 6, 1987:

  • In a recent study session, the Lawrence City Commission had discussed a proposal to set aside 2 percent of the cost of certain projects to buy visual artwork for the city. Projects such as new city buildings, improvements to parks and recreational facilities, and parking lots costing more than $10,000 were listed as possibly being included in the plan. Improvements such as street and sewer projects would not be considered.
  • A total of 443 Lawrence Chamber of Commerce members, or about 30 percent, had responded to a December survey seeking opinions on issues facing federal and state lawmakers this session. Overall, the respondents favored an increase of the speed limit on interstate highways to 65 mph. Members also voted against the inclusion of Washburn University in the Kansas Board of Regents system.
