Aquahawks openings: The Lawrence Aquahawks swimming team is always accepting new members. The Aquahawks are a year-round USA Swimming-sponsored competitive swim team. Vipers looking: Lawrence Vipers are looking for girls with 1997/98 birthdays for a 14U C softball team. The team is looking for all positions. Middle-school hoops: The Lawrence Parks & Recreation Department is taking registration for boys intramural middle school, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade basketball program through Jan. 12. Futsal registration: The Lawrence Parks & Recreation Department is taking registration for boys and girls indoor futsal (soccer), for K-sixth grades, thru Jan. 6. Baseball signups: Lawrence Parks & Recreation is taking team entries for the 2012 Heinrich League & Douglas County Amateur Baseball Association season. To register, stop by Holcom Park Recreation Center or go online at www.lprd.org to download a registration form. LPRD will accept the first eight team entries per age division. Soccer squads forming: KC Core Soccer of Lawrence is now forming new premier soccer teams in Lawrence. We are currently recruiting for U9 (second and third grades) and U10 (fourth grade) girls teams but will consider players of all ages. Dance clinic: The Lawrence Free State Dancers is conducting a “Junior Firebirds” Dance Clinic from 3-5 p.m. on Jan 8. The clinic is open to all children preschool through fifth grade. Swim clinic: Lawrence-area athletes will have a unique chance to enhance their competitive swimming skills by working with two swimming champions, Josh Davis and Ian Crocker. The Lawrence Aquahawks will host a Mutual of Omaha Breakout! Swim Clinic on Jan. 29, at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center. The event is a four-hour in-water stroke technique clinic from 8 a.m. to noon for 8- to 18-year-olds. Cost is $50. To register, contact Candy Gunderson at 785-423-1223 or candygun@aol.com.

Scheibler tournament: In honor of Preston Lee Scheibler, a basketball tournament for his scholarship fund, and his family will be held Jan. 7-8. The tournament will be on 28th and Haskell at Cougars Court. You must be 17 years old or older to play. Cost is $10 a person. FSHS fundraiser: A fund-raiser for Free State High’s baseball and softball teams will be held 6-11 p.m. Jan. 28 at Alvamar Country Club. The adults-only fundraiser will include live and silent auctions and a Trivia Night. The funds raised will go toward the construction of new indoor batting cages that both teams will benefit from year-round.

Girls basketball clinic: Lawrence High girls basketball coach Nick Wood and Free State High girls coach Bryan Duncan will host a one-day winter basketball clinic for girls in grades 4-8.
