25 years ago: Former KU student tosses hat into presidential ring

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 5, 1987:

A Kansas University alumnus was running for the highest office in the land, according to the Committee to Nominate and Elect Mauer for President. George “Doc” Mauer, who described himself as a “smooth talker, aggressive and tough” and a former “Big 8 prof” as well as a KU graduate, was now 54 years old and living in Orlando, Florida. A search of the files at the Adams Alumni Center showed that he had graduated in 1960 with a master’s degree in public administration. His short biography included his claim to have made political speeches in one-third of the United States. “Seldom in the annals of American history have we witnessed the rise of a major party candidate for the presidency who does not owe his credibility to political power brokers, a family fortune, victory in warfare, or TV/movie stardom,” his campaign notice read.
