40 years ago: Frigid weather spreads over state

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 4, 1972:

Snow, sleet, freezing rain and high winds were bringing blizzard conditions to a large region including Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, and northwest Oklahoma. Wind chills were down to 35 and 40 degrees below zero, with ice on power lines causing service interruptions. Hundreds of traffic accidents were reported in the multistate area, including a Mount Hope school bus overturning near Wichita. Seventeen accidents had been reported on Lawrence city streets, but none had involved serious injuries. However, a Linwood couple had been hurt, one of them critically, in a collision on a county road east of the city limits. Also, A Perry man reported that his car had slid into a ditch just east of Stull. To add insult to injury, when the man had gone for help, thieves had stolen both rear wheels from his vehicle and the spare tire from his unlocked trunk.
