25 years ago: Mayor, commissioners share New Year’s resolutions (or lack thereof)

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 2, 1987:

The previous day had marked the turning over of a new leaf for many people as their New Year’s resolutions had gone into effect. Several Lawrence locals revealed their pledges and promises to a Journal-World reporter. Mayor Sandy Praeger admitted with some embarrassment that she had resolved to clean the closets in her house. “We have always moved every five or six years and we’ve been in this one for 10 and things have just piled up,” she explained. City Manager Buford Watson showed strong resolve in pledging to lose 10 pounds, but many other Lawrence residents confessed that resolutions were far from their minds. U.S.D. 497 superintendent Dan Neuenswander said that he “hadn’t even thought about it,” while city commissioner David Longhurst said that he had “just been too busy to think about it.” Fellow commissioner and Kansas University geology professor Ernest Angino said that he wasn’t one for personal resolutions. “I just do things. I don’t pay attention to setting resolutions,” he said. “But I can make a resolution — to be re-elected.” Robert Cobb, finishing up the last day of his career as KU’s executive vice chancellor, said that he planned to return to teaching English full time after 25 years as an administrator. His resolution? “To talk less often to reporters in the coming year.”
