From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 1, 1972:

The United States was beginning the new year with a population of 208,557,735 as President Nixon greeted 1972 quietly, spending time with his wife Pat and watching football bowl games on television. In London, the clock that ran on Greenwich Mean Time was stopped for one-tenth of a second at midnight to synchronize it with the more accurate International Atomic Time. Here in Lawrence, the previous evening had been called “relatively calm” by police, fire, and hospital officials. City police had responded to 13 calls related to drunken behavior and had ended up jailing three miscreants. The first Lawrence baby of 1972, a girl, had been born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nothom at 1:29 a.m. The first day of the year was forecast to be mild and pleasant with temperatures reaching into the 50s.
