40 years ago: Central Junior High library to get an upgrade

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 25, 1972:

The Lawrence school district had received a $15,000 Title II federal grant for the purpose of upgrading the library of Central Junior High School. The library was to receive $8,000 the first year and $7,000 the second year to raise the library to American Library Association standards. Items to be purchased were to include books, audio-visual materials, periodicals, and “books of a low vocabulary level and high interest for underachievers.” Central, as one of five schools in the state to receive such a grant, had been chosen for several reasons, according to Title II officials: the school served the “lower than average socioeconomic level” and its programs were “oriented toward total involvement of students and parents of varying backgrounds.”
