100 years ago: KU engineers hold annual banquet

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 25, 1912:

“The engineering school of the University will have a fete this evening in Robinson gymnasium, when the annual banquet of that school will take place. About 275 men will attend. Every school in the engineering department will put on a ‘stunt’ individual to that school. [From the program — Names of scheduled presentations included the following] ‘Selecting Standards,’ ‘Conservation of Time,’ ‘The Development of a Railway,’ ‘Regulation of Public Utilities,’ ‘Exhaust Steam,’ ‘Some Things the Technical Man Ought To Stand For,’ and ‘Business Side of Engineering.’

“The question of what shall be done for the boys of the city is being much agitated at present, the latest move being the activity taken by the local churches in boys’ work. The boys have always been more or less looked after by the older people, but just now there is an evidence of interest that has never been shown before…. The boy problem is being taken up in earnest now and much good is expected to result from this. In the past there have always been classes for the boys at the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium, but other lines of boy activity are to be taken up in the future and the other made more attractive than in the past.”
