Suspect in vehicle chase drives on railroad tracks

Police conducted a brief pursuit of a vehicle Friday afternoon near downtown Lawrence as officers were looking for a wanted person associated with a vehicle.

Sgt. Trent McKinley, a patrol shift supervisor, said the pursuit began about 4:46 p.m. near Ninth and Pennsylvania streets as a suspect in a black older sport-utility vehicle drove away from officers. Police received an anonymous call that a person with outstanding warrants was associated with the vehicle.

The vehicle’s driver then eventually drove onto railroad tracks near Seventh and New York streets and headed northwest on the tracks by the Riverfront Plaza, under the Kansas River bridge and eventually came back out onto a street near Fifth and Tennessee streets. McKinley said officers who initially were chasing the vehicle did not drive on the tracks, but they notified other officers of the location so they could pick up the pursuit.

As the suspect was headed west on Fifth Street, supervisors then around 4:55 p.m. ordered those officers to call off the chase in the residential area because the vehicle was driving about 55 mph, McKinley said.

Officers were looking for the vehicle in the area as witnesses said they believed it headed north on Michigan Street, he said.
