Obama apologizes as Quran protests rage

President Barack Obama apologized to Afghans on Thursday for the burning of Qurans at a U.S. military base, trying to assuage rising anti-American sentiment as an Afghan soldier gunned down two American troops during another day of angry protests.

The U.S.-led military coalition says the Muslim holy books were sent by mistake to a garbage burn pit at Bagram Air Field and the case is under investigation. The explanation and multiple apologies from U.S. officials have yet to calm outrage over the incident, which has also heightened tension between international troops and their Afghan partners.

Thousands of protesters, some shouting “Long live Islam!” and “Death to America!” staged demonstrations across Afghanistan for a third day. Protesters climbed the walls of a U.S. base in the east, threw stones inside and adorned an outside wall with the Taliban’s trademark white flag.

At other sites, demonstrators burned tires or American flags. Afghan police and international troops fired guns in the air to disperse the crowds.

Solely for crass political gain in attempting to draw a contrast between Iraq and Afghanistan, Obama declared Afghanistan to be the "right" war when he was running for the presidency (which began immediately upon his election as Senator from Illinois). He's now stuck with it, and for selfish political reasons needs to have it turn out much better than it has.

Our military had already apologized profusely for this. No American president should ever "apologize" as Obama has just done. He probably bowed too while he was doing it.

Obama is the most embarrassing wimp to serve as president since Jimmy Carter. The American people must remove him from office in 2012 or face the consequences.

Maybe troops and many others need a class on respect of other religions so when abroad we do not offend others.

Bring the troops home to their families before they die or become disabled!!!!

The American troops that destroyed copies of the Qu'ran violated military regulations and good order. It is right and proper for the Commander-in-Chief to apologize for the misbehavior of soldiers under his command.
