25 years ago: Manhattan mayor to pay off wager at KU-K State game

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 20, 1987:

With the Kansas University and Kansas State basketball teams scheduled to meet on the floor of Allen Fieldhouse, Lawrence Mayor Sandy Praeger and Rick Mann, the mayor of Manhattan, Kansas, were to be sitting together watching the game in person. Mann had lost a “friendly wager” with Praeger back in November during a membership drive for the cities’ respective Chambers of Commerce. To hold up his end of the bet, Mann was required to sit with Praeger during the game, wear a KU T-shirt, and cheer for the Jayhawks. Mann now claimed that the terms of the wager had been uncertain, but said that he would enjoy the game anyway. “I’m looking forward to it actually,” he said. “I think it’ll be a good ball game. I really do. But you know who I’ll be rooting for. Let there be no mistake.” But would he still wear the T-shirt? “I will wear it, but not necessarily on the outside,” Mann said. “We didn’t agree on where it had to be. Let’s just say it may be a few layers down.”
