25 years ago: Downtown mall will now cost over 35 percent more

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 18, 1987:

A new price tag had been attached to the proposed downtown mall. Developers and city officials had today released a figure of $55.6 million as the estimate of building a mall in the 600 block of downtown Lawrence. The developers were planning to invest about $35.3 million in the project, while the public was expected to front about $20.3 million. The new estimate represented a 35.6 percent increase over the original 1983 total cost estimate of $41 million.
