Lawrence police officer arrested for DUI

A Lawrence police officer was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence by a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper on Jan. 5, District Attorney Charles Branson said Thursday.

Prosecutors are reviewing the case and waiting for test results before making a decision about charges, he said.

According to Douglas County Jail records, Marie Angel Haynes, 32, was booked into jail around 2:30 a.m. Jan. 5 after a trooper arrested her near Sixth and Iowa streets. She posted $250 bond after she was booked and was given notice to appear in court Jan. 17.

It is not uncommon for prosecutors to take additional time to await test results when reviewing DUI charges.

Haynes was hired in January 2011 as an officer after working as a Kansas University police officer, the department said at the time.

Police Chief Tarik Khatib said he could not comment on personnel matters when asked Thursday if he had suspended anyone relating to a January DUI arrest.
