From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 16, 1912:

  • "FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO AND FOR THE ARREST AND CONVICTION OF BIG DOG WHO STOLE OUR 'LIVE LAWN MOWER' YESTERDAY WE DO OFFER FIVE CENTS (5c) REWARD APIECE -- MARGARET AND GORDON GUSTAFSON. -- Readers of the Journal-World doubtless will remember the story of the manner in which Brother Gustafson kept his grass cut at 946 New Hampshire by means of a 'live lawn mower.' This mower was one nice white Bunny who was kept in a movable cage. This cage was moved about from place to place in the yard and the Bunny would nibble down the grass, so that the yard was kept in good condition always. Passersby noticed the Bunny and would comment on this novel manner of cutting the grass. Besides being useful the Bunny was a great pet and one that the children loved.... Yesterday a Big Dog was seen loitering about the yard -- and then the next that was known was that the Bunny was gone and so was the Big Dog. The Gustafson children are offering a reward of five cents apiece for their pet."
  • "There is a growing custom in favor of more recreation. A good many people look with alarm upon the growing tendency to spend Sundays in recreation. There is just one remedy for this and that is to have Saturday half holiday. We have become so accustomed to making Saturday the big trading day of the week that it would be hard to make the change but it ought to be made. If people could have recreation on Saturday they would go to church on Sunday. As it is they do their recreating on Sunday instead of going to church."
