KU working to solve communication problems associated with efficiency program

As Kansas University begins to make changes associated with its plan to be more efficient, administrators are working on ways to better communicate those moves.

Doug Riat, who had been serving as KU’s director of facilities operations, is no longer in that role, said Barry Swanson, associate vice provost for operations.

Though KU offered him another position, he declined it, Swanson said. As of Saturday, he is no longer employed at KU. Vince Avila, associate director of facilities planning and development for student housing, took over in an interim role.

Administrators are merging the student housing maintenance and facilities operations functions at KU.

Swanson acknowledged that communicating the move was difficult. Many of the employees work away from a desk, don’t check email regularly and work different shifts throughout the evening.

“It’s a difficult set of people to communicate with,” he said.

Swanson and other administrators held meetings as late as 11 p.m.

Swanson said he hoped news like the position changeover could be noted on the plan’s website, cfe.ku.edu.

“We want people to go there and be confident that they’re getting accurate, complete information,” Swanson said.

Though news of the position change wasn’t posted by Tuesday, it had been on Wednesday (though it was dated Feb. 6).

Gavin Young, a spokesman for the provost’s office, said more timely information would be coming to the website soon. Each of the 10 cases associated with the plan, called Changing for Excellence, has a staff leader. Young said those people should be providing weekly updates to the website.
