Jayhawks fall, 6-4, in softball season opener

? Liz Kocon hammered a two-run home run, and Lexi Bryant hit a solo homer, but Kansas University’s softball team fell to Tennessee-Martin, 6-4, in its season opener Friday night in the Southeastern Louisiana Tournament.

Rain delayed the start of the game almost six hours. The Jayhawks were scheduled to face Troy in a later game Friday night.

Tennessee-Martin took a two-run lead in the second inning, But Bryant, a freshman catcher, homered in her first career at-bat to cut KU’s deficit to 2-1 in the third.

Kocon belted a two-run homer in the fourth to put the Jayhawks up 3-2. KU went ahead 4-2 in the fifth when Elsa Moyer scored on a ground ball by Mariah Montgomery.

But Tennessee-Martin rallied for three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.

The Jayhawks will play Jackson State and Southeastern Louisiana as the tournament continues today.
