25 years ago: Poll reveals Kansans’ opinions on death penalty, drug testing

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 9, 1987:

A recent poll showed that 69 percent of Kansans were in favor of the death penalty, 24 percent opposed it, and 7 percent were neutral. The Kansas University Institute for Public Policy and Business Research had polled 561 state residents during random phone calls in late January. Responding to another issue on the poll, 87 percent said that they approved of mandatory drug testing for state employees whose work involved public safety. Seventy-nine percent of those polled said that college athletes should be tested for illegal drugs; 15 percent said they shouldn’t. On the issue of smoking in the workplace, 61 percent favored a ban and 30 percent opposed it.
