100 years ago: KU women form athletic association

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 9, 1912:

“At a meeting yesterday afternoon at the University Gymnasium fifty woman students of the University organized what will be known as ‘The Women’s Athletic Association.’ This will be conducted under regular athletic ruling and the girls expect to have some interesting contests…. The athletic sports in which the girls will indulge are basketball, baseball, swimming, soccer, and tennis. At present most of the time will be spent with basketball, and it is expected that there will be some thrilling games. Just now none of the games in which the girls take part will be open to the public, but later when they become more proficient those who wish to may attend and see just how proficient the K.U. girls can become at sports of this sort. The work is in charge of Dr. Margaret Johnson, head of the physical work for women…. More interest is being manifested by the women of Kansas University in athletic events for themselves, than ever has been before…. The promoting of athletics for women of the University here is right in line with the work that is going forward at all the big schools and college of the country, where women attend. Vassar, Smith, Wellesley and all the larger colleges for women have ‘crack’ basketball teams, and there are many girls in school here who are adapted to become stars at any of the games in which they take part.”
