From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 8, 1972:

  • A board had been selected to coordinate the establishment of an "Indian athletic hall of fame." The board members, including Billy Mills, Haskell and Kansas University graduate and former Olympic track star, met on the Haskell campus today to discuss guidelines for the process.
  • In response to an earlier letter to the editor about "certain pictures" being visible at a family's home near the Sunset Drive-In, letter-writer Mrs. Betty Gilbert wrote that area families had even more to worry about. "All of our children will be seeing and hearing worse in our Health Education and Human Development classes (sex education)," wrote Mrs. Gilbert. "I understand Woodlawn School children are guinea pigs.... Do you realize some classrooms within our school district don't even salute our American Flag! Maybe our School Board should be taught more Americanism than sex education."
