40 years ago: City postpones final decision on annexation

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 6, 1972:

The recent proposed annexation of 1,780 acres northwest of the Lawrence city limits was still raising strong opposition from angry residents. The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce had also assigned a subcommittee to investigate the proposal. The Lawrence City Commission, meanwhile, had decided to postpone until Feb. 15 the second and final reading of the proposal. According to Dennis Kallsen, assistant city manager, “The one week deferral between first, and second and final reading should give everyone sufficient time to present their views.”
