A Douglas County judge Thursday ordered a 19-year-old Ottawa man to stand trial on several charges related to a January robbery at a Lawrence apartment in the 1700 block of West 19th Street.
Four victims in the case testified at a preliminary hearing that Colby Blaine Simon and three other men they did not know came to their apartment early on Jan. 10 and stole several items, including marijuana, from them. One of the alleged victims said at least two of the suspects hit and kicked him as they ordered him to open a safe and give them marijuana.
Another alleged victim said he saw Simon grabbing property during the robbery. Simon is the only person Lawrence police have arrested in the case, and prosecutors have charged him with one count of aggravated robbery, three counts of robbery and four counts of aggravated kidnapping.
According to the testimony in the case, an investigator for Simon’s defense attorney has told the victims the three other suspects might have threatened Simon into leading them to the apartment that night. Defense attorney Sarah Swain argued Thursday prosecutors did not have evidence that linked her client to the crimes committed in the apartment, but District Judge Kay Huff ordered Simon to face a March 28 trial.
