From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 2, 1987:
- In Punxsatawney, Pa., the famous groundhog had emerged from his burrow and had seen his shadow this morning, thereby predicting six more weeks of winter. Most folks in Lawrence were not complaining about the winter weather so far, with a low of 45 degrees having been recorded on the first day of February. The Feb. 1 high of 61 had been 11 degrees below the all-time high recorded in 1944.
- The organizers of the Douglas County Warm Hearts campaign had reason to hope that the weather would continue mild. The fund drive to help low-income residents pay their heating bills had fallen more than $20,000 short of its goal this year.
