25 years ago: Local bar-owners to help fund free taxi rides on New Year’s Eve

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 27, 1987:

  • Local bar owners spoke today about their preparations for New Year’s Eve, just a few days away. Doug Hassig of Johnny’s Up and Under, 401 N. Second, was one of a small Lawrence group who helped sponsor free taxi rides home on that night. “We do it every year,” he said. “It’s worth our while businesswise to take care of our customers. We even take people’s keys sometimes,” he added. Joining Johnny’s in the taxi sponsorship were The Jazzhaus, Just a Playhouse, the Fraternal Order of Police, and DCCCA.
  • Rain and drizzle blew into town today, leaving a glaze of ice on local roads and putting wrecker services and road maintenance crews on full alert. This most recent storm, the third in just over a week, carried the possibility of one to three inches of more snow for the Lawrence area.
