40 years ago: KU dorm residents face another fee increase

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 19, 1972:

Kansas University officials were to meet soon on whether to recommend an increase in residence hall rates to the Kansas Board of Regents. Beginning last fall, single room rates in all dormitories had been raised from $1,150 to $1,200 per year, and double rooms increased from $900 to $950. “My position is that I question another increase after one last fall — why another one?” queried Chancellor Raymond Nichols. “It may be justified and it may not be. If it is, I want to be able to defend it if it goes to the board.” Director of housing Joe Wilson said that the additional charge for the two freshmen women’s dorms, for example, was needed to provide “art and multi-purpose rooms” for residents.
