From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 15, 1987:

Lawrence residents were beginning to dig themselves out of a major snowfall this morning. Street crews and towing services were on 24-hour duty, with Jayhawk Tow reporting 70 calls of stuck automobiles and accidents since the storm’s beginning early the previous morning. One accident had occurred when a city sand truck had tumbled into a ditch early this morning on North Michigan street. All area schools, including those in Lawrence, were closed today and most of the previous night’s school-board meetings had been canceled; however, Kansas University, Haskell Indian Junior College, and Baker University in Baldwin remained open as students finished their last few days of final exams. Sales were brisk in town for such items as snow shovels, ice melters, tire chains — and pizza. Local pizza businesses reported this morning that the demand for deliveries from Lawrence residents had been up to twice the amount for a normal weekday night.
