40 years ago: KU freshman injured in sledding accident

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 13, 1972:

  • Kansas University freshman Patrica Smigin, Kansas City, was listed in satisfactory condition today at the KU Medical Center after having suffered head and internal injuries in a campus sledding accident. After her sled had crashed into a rock retaining wall southwest of Potter Lake, Smigin had been taken by ambulance to Watkins Memorial Hospital and then transferred about an hour later to the Kansas City medical center. Four other people had suffered weather-related injuries in the past few days, including one additional sledding mishap and three who had fallen on ice.
  • Lawrence residents were relieved to get a break today from 11 straight days of “sub-freezing temperatures, oppressive sleet and ice and generally cloudy skies” as the sun finally broke through and pushed the thermometer up into the middle 30s.
