Paola 43, Baldwin 37

Baldwin City — The Baldwin High girls let a five-point lead slip away in the fourth quarter as they lost to Paola in their Frontier League opener.

The game was also Baldwin’s home opener, although it was played at the Collin’s Center because of sewer problems at the Baldwin Junior High School gym locker room.

Behind junior guard Katie Jones, who led all scorers with 16 points, the Bulldogs started strong, taking a 19-13 lead to the locker room at halftime and maintaining a 31-26 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

KC Piper 69, Tonganoxie 52

Tonganoxie — Jack Dale led the Kaws with 15 points, Ben Johnson added nine and James Grizzle scored eight.

Tonganoxie fell to 0-2.

Paola 48, Baldwin 46

Baldwin City — The Baldwin High boys erased an 18-point second-half deficit before falling to Paola.

The Bulldogs (3-2) used furious play to score seven-straight points and briefly take a 40-39 lead against Paola. However, the visitors were able to regain the lead and survive two Baldwin chances to tie or win the game in the contest’s final 37 seconds.
