A 19-year-old Horton man pleaded no contest Friday to two counts of aggravated burglary stemming from two August incidents in Lawrence, according to court records.

Austin Lee Whitebird was accused of entering two Lawrence homes on Aug. 24 and trying to assault two women as they slept.

Whitebird was arrested after a woman reported that she woke up about 3:45 a.m. to find a man, who apparently had broken into her home just south of the Kansas University campus, in her bed. Police were called, and although officers didn’t find the suspect, they remained in the area in unmarked vehicles.

About three hours later, police saw a man chasing Whitebird in the area. Police determined that a second woman, who lived next door to the first victim, had awakened to find a man in bed with her. That woman’s husband hit the suspect over the head with a pot and chased him outside the house, where police arrested him.

Two misdemeanor counts of sexual battery were dropped as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Aggravated burglary is a level-5 severity crime and carries a penalty of up to 136 months in prison, depending on someone’s criminal history.

Whitebird is scheduled for sentencing Jan. 18.
