Veritas boys basketball smothers St. Mary’s, 49-23

? Veritas Christian School held St. Mary’s Academy to three points on 1-of-17 shooting in the first half Saturday night en route to a 49-23 high school boys basketball victory.

“We really talked about getting off to a good start,” said Veritas coach Gary Hammer, whose squad led 11-0 after one quarter and 23-3 at halftime. “Our defense was really intense and really good. I was really pleased with the intensity we had.”

Thomas Bachert scored 13 points and pulled down six rebounds for the Eagles. Andrew Currier added eight points, and Chad Steiben and Caleb Holland scored six points apiece.

“St. Mary’s is a big rivalry of ours, so it’s not hard to get up for them,” Hammer said. “We just did everything pretty well. We just smothered them with our zone defense, and they didn’t get good looks. We have well-balanced scoring. A lot of guys can score.”

Veritas (5-0) will play at Topeka Cair Paravel on Tuesday.
