25 years ago: Public hearing to be held on Oread rezoning

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 3, 1987:

A proposal to downzone part of the Oread neighborhood was to get a full public hearing in January. The request for downzoning about 110 lots in the 900 blocks of Indiana and Louisiana streets and the 900 and 1000 blocks of Mississippi, Ohio, and Tennessee streets had been discussed at several public meetings, but a public hearing had never been held. In September, the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission had voted against conducting a public hearing after having received several letters of opposition and a recommendations against the proposal from the city’s planning staff. This week, however, the Lawrence City Commission had voted 4-1, with Mayor Mike Amyx opposed, to initiate the rezoning request that the Oread Neighborhood Association hoped would slow the razing of old houses to make way for new apartments.
