40 years ago: Students start classes at Haskell while enrollees still arriving

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 30, 1972:

A total of 857 students began the new semester today at Haskell Indian Junior College. Registrar Haddon Moats said that he anticipated as many as 300 additional students to enroll between today and the Sept. 8 deadline. Some student were late arriving because of transportation problems, while others had been fulfilling commitments to their summer jobs; a few, said Moats, “just procrastinate.” The college had accepted 1,457 students for fall enrollment, but according to the registrar, Haskell usually experienced an attrition rate of about 20 percent before the start of classes.
