From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 29, 1972:

• Area wildlife were still feasting on melons grown by farmers and gardeners. Longtime melon grower Fred Grob was shown in a front-page photograph with watermelons indicating damage from coyotes and possibly raccoons. Grob estimated that he had lost 50 melons so far in spite of his attempts to scare off the animals. His methods so far had included flashing lights, flares, smoke bombs, scarecrows, and beach balls suspended on strings.
• A recent blood drive had been a “wonderful” success, according to Jo Byers, director of the Douglas County Red Cross office. The 503 pints collected had included 175 new donors, many of whom were young persons. Additionally, 35 of the donors had been S.S. Kresge employees who had volunteered to give blood after their company had made a special appeal, allowed them paid time off, and provided bus transportation to the donation site.
