Two Topeka residents were taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital Monday morning after a two-vehicle crash involving a semitrailer on U.S. Highway 24-59 near the Douglas County-Jefferson County line.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, at 8:10 a.m. a 2005 Freightliner semitrailer trailer driven by Kelly L. Minor, 39, of Gridley, was headed south on Third Street near the county line attempting to turn east onto the highway. A 1998 Dodge Ram pickup truck, driven by James Duane Spence, 41, of Topeka, was headed west on the highway.

Minor failed to yield to the pickup truck, causing Spence to strike the trailer, the crash report said.

Minor was not injured, but Spence and Jacob D. Spence, 12, also of Topeka, were taken to LMH. Both were treated and later released, a hospital spokesman said. All three people wore seat belts.

The highway was closed immediately after the crash Monday morning, and Douglas County Undersheriff Steve Hornberger said officers re-routed traffic onto a local gravel road. The highway opened later Monday morning.

Mike Frizzell of Operation 100 News tweeted about 8:50 a.m. that emergency crews extricated two people in the crash.
