From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 26, 1987:

The Kansas University marching band was to spend part of Labor Day weekend playing for President Reagan. The president was scheduled to be in Topeka for former Kansas Gov. Alf Landon's 100th birthday celebration, and the Marching Jayhawks were to perform outside the Landon home. Among the other tunes, the band was to play "Hail to the Chief" for the president before launching into "Happy Birthday" for Landon as his birthday cake was brought to him. Band members did not appear to mind in the least giving up their holiday weekend (the last before Thanksgiving) for the event. "Not very many people get to see the president of the United States, let alone play for him," said Nancy Patton, a percussionist in the band. "It's a big honor."
