Charges filed against Overland Park man accused of injuring Lawrence police officer

Douglas County prosecutors Thursday filed five charges against a 26-year-old Overland Park man accused of injuring a Lawrence police officer Wednesday night during a chase in the 2500 block of Redbud Lane.

John S. Kissell faces a charge of aggravated battery against a law enforcement officer, plus one count of felony theft and three misdemeanor counts of possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said Kissell in the incident ran from officers who were investigating a stolen truck in the area. After a foot chase, police alleged Kissell pinned an officer’s leg and applied force, injuring the officer’s knee. The officer, who was later taken to the hospital, then was able to use a Taser to subdue Kissell, who was taken into custody.

Kissell was also arrested on a warrant for a Johnson County probation violation related to 2011 domestic battery and felon in possession of a firearm convictions

A judge also set Kissell’s bond at $15,000 and ordered him not to possess a firearm. His next hearing is scheduled for Tuesday in front of District Judge Peggy Kittel.
