25 years ago: Lawrence sidewalks and bike paths up for improvement

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 20, 1987:

  • Work was scheduled to begin next month on plans to spend $50,000 on sidewalk and bicycle path improvements in the area, according to Tim Miller, Traffic Safety Commission chairman. The Lawrence City Commission had included the fund in the city’s 1988 budget, which had won final approval on Aug. 11. Bike paths in particular had been a low-priority item in the last several city budgets. Many recommendations in the 1976 “Pedalplan for Lawrence” had not been carried out, said Miller, and the plan itself was badly in need of updating.
  • For the second time this week, Lawrence had dodged a bullet as severe thunderstorms raged around the area. High winds and large hail had flattened crops, broken windows, and torn off roofs in several eastern Kansas towns, but Lawrence had escaped any significant damage.
