Both golf courses at Alvamar Country Club were packed Monday with competitors trying to qualify for the Midwest Classic, a web.com (formerly Nationwide) tour event scheduled this weekend at LionsGate in Overland Park.

Seven players from each course, just two from Kansas, qualified. Zechariah Potter of Andover shot a 69 on the public course to tie with five other golfers for fourth before surviving a playoff. On the private side, Ryan Spears of Wichita shot a 70, tied with five others for fourth and also survived a playoff.

Chris Thompson was the low man from Lawrence, shooting a 70 on the public side and missing a playoff by one stroke. Thompson qualified last year with a 65 at Alvamar.

Joey McLister of Charlotte, N.C., fired a 66 on the private side for the low round of the day. Jonathon Krick of Peoria Heights, Ill., had the low round on the private side with a 67.

“We got one of the highest ratings for a qualifying spot last year and the web.com people were very pleased with the way the course was set up today and with the shape of the course,” Alvamar pro David Dunn said. “It was a beautiful day. There were actually people wearing jackets.”
