The year 2012 wasn’t the first time some people were paying attention to the Mayan calendar and its alleged relevance to modern times. In a few days, an interpretation of writer Jose Arguelies referred to as the “harmonic convergence” was expected to occur, and several people in Lawrence were planning to gather at Clinton Lake to observe the sunrise on the 16th and 17th. “We don’t know how many to expect,” said Charles Gruber, a local man who said he had been reading about the event for some time. “We are gathering together and asking our friends to gather together to be in a receptive mood and a very special place in a special mood at a specific time…. I’m not expecting to see extraterrestrial anything. I think the issue is much more on what you’re going to see inside of yourself…. The overriding emotion predicted from all sources is joy and harmony.”
