40 years ago: Old library in its final week

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 8, 1972:

  • Gary Condra, executive director of Cottonwood, Inc., and former director of adult education for the Lawrence school district, was named one of four Kansas Jaycees to represent Kansas in the United States Jaycees’ Ten Outstanding Young Men competition. The other Kansans chosen were Dr. Robert Charles Lee, David M. Greene Jr., and Larry G. Knackstedt. The four state winners were to compete in Salt Lake City in January, 1973.
  • Furniture was arriving this week and stacks were nearly finished at the new Lawrence Public Library, Seventh and Vermont. The upcoming Saturday was to be the final day that the library would operate in its old home at Ninth and Vermont.
