Topeka ? Casey Moore, a political newcomer, will take on the longest-serving member of the Kansas Legislature — state Sen. Anthony Hensley, D-Topeka — in the November general election.

Moore, 35, a commodity trader who has lived in Topeka since 2006, defeated Matthew Windheuser, 23, of Lawrence. Moore won 81 percent to 19 percent. In Douglas County precincts, Moore led Windheuser 55 percent to 45 percent.

Windheuser had originally filed to run against Sen. Marci Francisco, D-Lawrence, but the redistricting plan ordered by a three-judge panel put more of Douglas County in District 19 and threw Windheuser’s residence into that district.

The newly aligned district includes western Douglas County, east Topeka and all of Osage County.

During the campaign, Moore called for less government spending and tax cuts. He repeated his campaign slogan often, playing off his name “More jobs, less government.”

Windheuser had said he wanted a comprehensive review of state spending on schools.
